About the Moca SD The Moca SD (SD for Single Dose) is the newest member of Olympia Express’s Moca grinder family. Instead of holding a standing supply of beans in a hopper, it is designed to grind one dose at a time: you weigh in the beans for a single shot, grind, and the coffee goes straight into the portafilter. Retention is around 0.1 g, low enough that Olympia does not fit a bellows or blower to clear the burrs. It shares the same 64 mm flat steel burrs and 300 W motor as the hopper Moca, in a more compact body just 28.5 cm tall. Build quality and history Olympia Express was founded in Switzerland in 1928, and the Moca grinder has accompanied the Cremina and Maximatic since 1967. The SD is the most recent development of that line, built to the same standard from steel and aluminium, with a mirror-finished stainless steel front, powder-coated steel side frames, and four rubber feet for stability. A neat touch is the removable single-dose hopper: a rotary slide on its base closes automatically when you lift it off, so it seals the beans and works as a weighing vessel at the same time. Reviewers note the grinder feels dense and precisely made for its small size, in line with the rest of the Olympia range. How it works and who it suits Single-dosing suits people who switch between different beans often, or who want to grind only what they need with almost no waste or stale grounds left behind. Grinding is quick, on the order of a few seconds per dose, and the low burr speed keeps the coffee from heating up. The grinder is short enough that a portafilter rests easily at the chute, which makes for a tidy workflow on a small counter. Compared with the standard hopper Moca, the SD trades the convenience of keeping one coffee loaded for lower retention and easy bean-swapping. Choose the SD if you change beans regularly or single-dose by weight; choose the hopper Moca if you keep one coffee loaded and prefer the classic glass hopper. The grinder includes a way to adjust the grind range, set conservatively from the factory. Olympia’s manual explains the procedure if you find you cannot grind fine enough for espresso out of the box. Olympia recommends grinder-cleaning tablets (such as Grindz or Cafetto) and a periodic wipe of the burrs and hopper, rather than full disassembly.
