Overview SSP (Sung Sim Precision) is a Korean burr manufacturer that produces aftermarket replacement burrs for most major professional grinder platforms. This 83 mm set fits the Mazzer Major and any other grinder using the 83 mm Mazzer bolt pattern, including the popular DF83 and DF83V single-dose grinders, the Ceado E37S family, and the LynWeber HG-1. What the LS geometry does in the cup LS stands for Lab Sweet. It is sometimes referred to as a “cast steel” profile because it deliberately moves away from the very tight, uniform particle distribution of modern high-uniformity burrs and toward something closer to vintage cast burrs. The result is a heavier, sweeter cup with more body, more perceived sweetness, and a slightly wider range of particle sizes. It still produces a high-concentration shot, but the texture is denser and the flavour rounder than what HU geometry produces from the same coffee. This geometry is a good match for medium roasts, light-medium roasts where you want sweetness rather than ultra-clean clarity, and for baristas who find ultra-uniform grinds taste a bit hollow or flat. If you mostly drink traditional espresso and want a syrupy, full-bodied shot, LS is often the more enjoyable pick over HU. How LS compares to MP and HU on the same platform Geometry Cup profile Best for HU (High Uniformity) Dense body, classic espresso, high concentration Traditional espresso, medium and darker roasts MP (Multi-Purpose) Versatile, good clarity for both espresso and filter Switching between espresso and pour-over LS (Lab Sweet) Heavy, sweet, dense; rounder mouthfeel Espresso with maximum sweetness and body About the Red Speed coating Red Speed is SSP’s TiAlCN (Titanium Aluminium Carbon Nitride) coating. It increases surface hardness and reduces friction at the cutting edge, with two practical effects: the burrs stay sharp considerably longer (around 5,000 kg of coffee, vs. roughly 1,000 kg for uncoated steel) and they generate less heat during grinding, which helps preserve aromatic compounds in the bean. The coating itself doesn’t meaningfully change particle distribution; that’s set by the geometry. Most users report a brief seasoning period of 5 to 10 kg before the cup profile fully settles. Use of non-OEM burrs may affect the grinder manufacturer’s warranty, which is worth being aware of before installation.
